Arguments over CIS program in Parliament

The MPs cannot reach a consensus as regards Moldova's cooperation with the other member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Before adopting the Council of CIS Heads of State's decision on the interstate program of join crime fighting measures for 2008-2010 in two readings, some of the MPs questioned its necessity, while others insisted that it should be approved, Info-Prim Neo reports. After presenting the mentioned program, Minister of the Interior Victor Catan said it is useless as it is approved too late and the Ministry will not manage to carry out the planned activities. Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu said the agreement on crime combating signed in the Kazakh capital of Astana is good for Moldova. “We cannot sign any document proposed by the CIS. The economic agreements are an exception,” Ghimpu said. The Democrat MPs insisted that the Parliament should approve the program, saying there is no need to make a fuss about nothing. “We'd better fight crime, not contradict each other. We are in favor of the program and wish those who will implement it good luck,” said Democrat MP Dumitru Diacov. The leader of the Democratic faction Marian Lupu said there is no place for incoherent discussions in Parliament at a time when the program was approved by the parliamentary commissions. “As former chairman of the CIS, I ask your to vote,” Ghimpu said. The CIS program was adopted by a majority of votes.
