Architects and designers urged to transform Chisinau into city of lights

Architects and designers are invited to take part in a contest to transform evening Chisinau into a city of lights. Those who want can register at designcafeclub.md by filling out an application form by December 8. Later, until February 15, they must present the project to light a building in the capital city. The competition is staged by the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration.

The Agency’s director general Ion Stefanita, in a news conference at IPN on November 28, said there will be chosen the best three projects. The budget per project should not exceed €400,000. “Before being lit, the facades of the selected buildings will be restored. We aim to develop nocturnal tourism, the tourist areas and the historical center of Chisinau city,” stated Ion Stefanita.

He reminded that French architect Alain Guilhot, who lit the Eiffel Tower and another over 300 buildings all over the world, visited Chisinau at the start of November. He accepted to cooperate and help transform evening Chisinau into a city of lights. “Our heritage and the historical monuments need investments not only inside, but also outside. We have nice architectural buildings and facades that should be put to good use and emphasized,” said Ion Stefanita.

Alexandrin Buraga, founder of the platform “Design Cafe & Club”, which is specialized in developing and promoting architecture and design education, said the goal pursued through the contest is to improve the image of Chisinau and to develop urban areas. “We want to include the city in international intervention trends in architecture and design, to raise its level to an international one,” he stated.

Daniela Neagu, PR manager of the contest, said the competition is designed to promote the ideas of specialists in the field and to give a new life to evening Chisinau.

The winning projects will be awarded. The top prize is €2 500, the second prize is €1 500, while the third prize is €1 000. The winners will be chosen by a Moldovan-French jury led by Alain Guilhot. The award ceremony will take place at the start of next March.
