Arcadie Suceveanu was reelected chairman of the Writers’ Union of Moldova during its general assembly on October 5. Suceveanu won the seat in October 2010, when he replaced long-serving academician Mihai Cimpoi, Info-Prim Neo reports. This time, Arcadie Suceveanu was up against historian Iurie Colesnic. The chairman was re-elected with 138 out of 161 votes for a term of 4 years. Arcadie Suceveanu admitted that he didn’t manage to do a lot of what he planned since his first election because he was dragged through trials by those unhappy with the results of the vote in 2010. Writer Vitalie Ciobanu says that the chairman of the Writers’ Union must insist that the occupation of writer is included in the registry of jobs so that these people could have a normal pension after retirement. At the assembly, poet Dumitru Matcovschi stated that writers should take attitude regarding the situation in the country and especially at the public TV channel. “The public television has become a dump. Each evening we watch dumb Colombian movies. We must revolt! The writer who sees this kind of thing and keeps silent is a coward”, said Dumitru Matcovschi. Also during the meeting, the Union’s Council of 15 members was elected for a 4 year term.
