April 7 events played on stage
An initiative group consisting of victims and witnesses of the 7 April 2009 events enacted the moments of horror they lived two years ago. The play was staged last night, April 8, at the Ginta Latina Center in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Sergiu Duminica, one of the leaders of the informal “April 7 movement”, said the play was intended to raise awareness of both society and authorities, in particular the law enforcement bodies.
Anatol Matasaru, participant in the 2009 protests, enacted a police officer and tried to reproduce his experience lived in the police station, where he had been taken together with many other protesters. Vasile Costiuc, the leader of the movement Democracy at Home, played the role of a prosecutor, trying to imitate the indifference with which the protesters were treated, how they were arrested and beaten, and in the next two years how they have been dragged through courts. Nina Caraman, a student and a witness of the April events, played the role of a girl who was raped while in police custody.
A mother of two young people who were ill-treated on 7 April 2009 said she was shocked to see the horror lived by her children in the Square and in the police stations. Radu Poalelungi, another member of the audience, said the play helped him revive his memories of that night two years ago, and student Denis Secrieru said that the day of 7 April 2009 and the following night will never be forgotten, because those were moments when the youth took to the streets to express their exasperation.
The play was enhanced by a musical component which featured famous bands like Gindul Mitei and Stefan Voda.
On 7 April 2009 thousands of young people protested against the results of the April 5 legislative elections. Soon the peaceful protests degenerated into violence as a result of which the Parliament building and the Presidential Office were ransacked. Several hundreds of young people were taken to police stations and maltreated there.
