April 7 events in the context of Moldova’s Independence at its 18th anniversary. Info-Prim Neo interview with Antonita Fonari

{The April 7 protests that resulted in acts of violence, including clashes between the protesters and the police, human victims and destruction of the buildings of the Parliament and the Presidential Office, constituted the most prominent evens this year and, perhaps, one of the rarest and memorable events in Moldova’s period of independence. Paradoxically, the events were not treated as such by the political class and the society. The survey on the April 7 events initiated by the news agency Info-Prim Neo among leaders of political parties of different orientations and of the civil society aims to diagnose the quality of Moldova’s Independence at its 18th anniversary and of the society in general and to find answers to the question “what should we do next?” This time, the questions are answered by Antoniţa Fonari, the secretary general of the NGO Board of Moldova.} [ - What did the April 7 events represent for Moldova’s Independence : a rare occurrence or a natural phenomenon?] Some people realized that the country is a value and that the vandalizing of the Parliament can make them suffer from depression. The April 7 events represented a test for the young people and the civil society, for those who took to the streets to express oneself or to defend the right to expression, a lesson for those who were still believing that the European Union cares about Moldova. We should not lie to ourselves that there were committed mistakes, that the massacred young people were victims. One of the major objectives of the Communists was to polarize the society and they managed to do this. Another goal was to divert people’s attention from poverty and the thefts by the Voronin clan by identifying a foreign enemy. Romania fit this role well. [– Why the violent clashes, acts of vandalism, human victims and other blamable conducts could not be avoided?] – The Opposition joined forces too late. The consultants of the politicians from the Opposition did not have the necessary training to study the tactics and adequately respond to Communists’ moves. Everybody stood up to Voronin individually. Some politicians found it funny to see Pasat, Urecheanu and others in scenarios of laws with “medieval inquisition” or Stati made to pay indulgences. I was surprised how many ordinary people remained with the impression that Svetlana Chifa was ’involved’ in something as they did not arrest her out of the blue. More and more people now discover that the Communists control the Security and Information Service and the police and use KGB-like methods. The politicians should have realized that in a country with a Communist regime, one can control the situation only if they have experienced consultants, especially who know well the tactics of the Soviet KGB. [– Why the causes of these events weren’t probed and the results weren’t published even five months afterward?] – If new early elections take place, I’m sure that the Opposition will find money for the electoral campaign. In the next surveys, ask the politicians from the Opposition why they did not create a fund from where to pay foreign independent experts and professionals who would analyze the filmed April 7 events, the testimonies of the witnesses, the documents existing before the given events? I’m sure that a team of medical examiners and experts of the international security services do not cost more than an electoral campaign. Moreover, a document of a high quality would refund a part of the money, not mentioning the investment in the image of those who were to initiate an inquiry and the power of the message accompanied by images and testimonies. [– Can you draw an analogy between the April 7 events and some other historical events?] – There are many analogies. The history consists of subsequent shows with masks and witch hunters. As a matter of fact, the attempts to take absolute power and appropriate all the money existing in the world are accompanied by disasters. If you want a parallel … Voronin acted like Irod. He targeted at children, destroying physically and especially psychically the young people as he wanted to make sure that he can destroy the one who could replace him someday. The priests whom he paid a lot of money did not read the Bible to him and did not tell him that the worst curses affect the children and the millions that the current president of Moldova will leave to his grandchildren will not help. [–– What lessons the independent Moldovan should learn from the April 7 events?] – Don’t let others steal and lie so that you could steal and lie yourself because you can also be robbed, lied and misjudged someday. The proverb “the sword cannot cut the bent head” applied to the Ottoman army and became irrelevant after the Communists started to use teargases, gallows and electricity posts.
