April 5 election not fair, Baroness Emma Nicholson
Baroness Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne is disappointed with how things developed in Moldova after the parliamentary elections on 5 April 2009. At a news conference in Chisinau on Saturday, she reiterated her position that the elections were not fair, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I told everybody that the elections weren’t fair and that they should be repeated. What I saw in Transnistria makes me say this”, said the baroness, adding that human rights were violated on a grand scale. Those who wished to cross the Nistru and participate in the ballot were threatened they would lose their papers and would not be able to return home; others were threatened with the loss of their jobs.
The British parliamentarian said she signaled all the faults that she remarked, yet they were not included in the report of the international observation mission. Emma Nicholson also said the electoral system was corrupt and that there were other observers as well who didn’t agree with the findings of the report.
The baroness has underlined she is pleased that the Republic of Moldova is now in a better situation. The recent meeting of donors for Moldova, which produced an aid package totaling €1.9b, is a very important step that will help Moldova implement social and infrastructure reforms and improve the judicial system, she said.
