Approved by Parliament: 24 war veterans will receive 30 thousand lei

The draft law providing lump sum payments of 30 thousand lei for World War II veterans was passed today in two readings by the Parliament, IPN reports.

MP of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists Tatiana Cunetchi, told the plenum that the bill is proposed in the context of the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the Second World War on May 9, 2025. "In order to keep the memory of those times alive and as a sign of gratitude for the contribution of each World War II veteran, it is necessary for the state to intervene to support them at least with financial aid," said the MEP, who is among the authors of the initiative.

According to Mr. Cunetchi, the bill envisaged a one-off financial support of 10 thousand lei. At the same time, the Government has examined the legislative initiative and presented a positive opinion, proposing to supplement the amount by 10 thousand lei. In addition, veterans of the Second World War currently benefit from the provisions of the Law on Supplementary Social Protection of Certain Categories of the Population, which on May 9 each year grants them a support of 10 thousand lei.

Cumulatively, these people, who, according to the latest government data, number 25, will receive this financial support of 30 thousand lei, the MP said. According to her, the provisions of the draft are valid only for 2025.

"At the same time, in the context of the Government's opinion, I would like to mention, the amount of the established one-time financial support, but not paid due to the death of the beneficiary, will be paid to the surviving spouse, children of the beneficiary, and in case of their absence, to the person who proves that he incurred occasional expenses due to the death, based on the permission released by the state social insurance bodies," Tatiana Cunetschi said.

Deputy of the Action and Solidarity Party Boris Marcoci said that regretfully, there are already 24 World War II veterans, because one of them has died. In the context, he asked about the retroactive application of the provisions.

Tatiana Cunetchi said that, in her opinion, the law should have a retroactive aspect as there are provisions stipulating that the money can be collected by survivors. However, the mechanism of granting the funds is the competence of the government.
