Appeals Court reduces jail terms of two foreigners convicted of trafficking in children

An Italian and a person with dual nationality, of Norway and Russia, who two years ago were sentenced to 21 years in jail each for procuring, child pornography and trafficking in children, got a four-year reduction in their jail term. However, the prosecutors intend to appeal the Chisinau Appeals Court’s decision to the Supreme Court of Justice and will demand upholding the sentence of the first court, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, using the legend of selecting children for a football team, the Italian man recruited children from socially disadvantaged families for sexual exploitation. The police arrested the man when he attempted to sexually abuse a boy aged 13. Earlier, in 2000, the Italian was convicted for having sexual relations with minors in Italy.

As to the second man, who is from Norway and holds also the nationality of Russia, he came to Moldova to set up a network for providing sex tourism services for persons of a nontraditional sexual orientation. He created a website where he placed the profiles of a group of minor boys from Moldova. For the provided sexual services, the clients paid by €500 on average. The minors received 150 to 500 lei of this sum. The sexually exploited victims aged between 14 and 17 were from socially deprived families. Some of them were from Transnistria.

In the spring of 2012, the court sentenced the two foreign citizens to 21 years behind bars each, while three Moldovans to 10, 11 and 18 years in prison.
