Antonio Guterres: UN calls on whole world to respect territorial integrity of Moldova

The United Nations calls on the whole world to respect the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. Any attack to this effect is a violation of international law, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated in a news conference in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Antionio Guterres said the OSCE is responsible for the 5+2 format, but one of these sides hasn’t been a party to the mediation process. “Moldova is on the front line as regards the keeping of peace and stability in the world, with the war so close to it and with the divisions we know. I hope it will be a clear sign of responsibility on the part of all the players from both sides of the Nistru River and this feeling of responsibility will prevent any attack on the Republic of Moldova because the Republic of Moldova deserves peace, stability and massive international support for coping with these enormous challenge related to refugees. The independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova should be kept,” stated the UN Secretary-General.

Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița in the same news conference said the analyses of the current government of Moldova show a minimum risk of escalation of the war into the Republic of Moldova. “We use all the diplomatic ways in the dialogue with the de facto authorities of the Transnistrian region to make sure that we keep peace in the Republic of Moldova,” stated the official.

Premier Gavrilița also said that if the results of the analyses concerning the escalation of the war change, they will communicate with the people through official channels.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is paying a two-day visit to the Republic of Moldova. On May 10, the official will visit the accommodation center for Ukrainian refugees situated on Ghioceilor St in Chisinau.

The armed conflict for Moldova’s integrity of 1992 was stopped by an agreement signed by the then President of Moldova Mircea Snegur and the then President of Russia Boris Yeltsin. Later, the Russian Federation became a member of the Transnistrian settlement negotiation format that also includes OSCE, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, de facto administration of the region, the U.S. and the EU.

This year it has been 30 years since the Republic of Moldova became a UN member.
