Anticorruption Center opens investigation into sale of Maturinol

The Anticorruption Center (CCCEC) launched an investigation into the sale of Maturinol. The doctor who prescribed the preparation, Ion Iliciuc, is investigated in this case. He is accused of abuse of power that is punished with a fine of 3 000 to 8 000 lei or up to three years in jail. CCCEC press officer Anastasia Mihalceanu has told Info-Prim Neo that the investigation was started on the case, not on a certain person, but it is evident that Ion Iliciuc will be examined from different viewpoints as he was the one who prescribed the medication. In 2011, there were taken samples for the medical-legal examination that provided the data needed to open the legal case. “It was established that Maturinol poses a special risk. When administered to children, it can generate serious complications and negatively affect their subsequent development. In some of the children, components of the preparation influenced the rapid development of brain tumors,” said Anastasia Mihalceanu. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Ion Iliciuc, who created the drug Maturinol, said the case was fabricated. “My goal was to help the children who suffer from diseases of the nervous system as their treatment includes a series of painful injections. I wanted them to suffer less, but now I suffer myself,” he stated. Ion Iliciuc was dismissed from the post of director of the Mother and Child Center on October 3, 2011 by an order signed by Minister of Health Andrei Usatii. The minister said then that he was discharged for a number of reasons, including the incorrect and inefficient management of the institutions’ funds, the people’s dissatisfaction and the inspections carried out by the Anticorruption Center.
