Anticorruption Center head says he did not intend to limit press' access to information
The head of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime(CCCEC) Viorel Chetraru said he did not intend to limit the access of the press to information when he announced he will not talk with the journalists about the statements made by former presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu. “This announcement cannot be interpreted as limitation of the access to information,” Viorel Chetraru said in a program broadcast by Radio Moldova. He was asked to comment on an analysis published by Info-Prim Neo on August 16, which treated the CCCEC head's statements as attack on the freedom of the press and violation of the legislation.
“We regularly hold news conferences to inform about the activities carried out by the Center. There is nothing to hide from civil society. But I will not allow transferring the investigations into criminal cases from investigators' offices to television studios,” Chetraru said.
He stressed the statements that a public institution is used as an instrument for intimidating persons and companies that are inconvenient for the power are made in a period that precedes the election campaign.
“The persons who were unsuccessful in elections are trying by different, easier ways to attract audience and build an image of saviors of the nation. Criminal cases were opened against some of the persons and the prosecutor's office and the court are to pronounce on them. I should not make comments in this case. I represent a public authority and my task is to analyze every case apart in the shortest period possible and remit the cases to these institutions,” Chetraru said.
In a news conference on August 12, Viorel Chetraru, referring to the accusations made by Sergiu Mocanu, said: “For the reasons stated above... the Center asks the representatives of the mass media to accept our position not to return to this subject anymore, no matter what other accusations are made. We will fully ignore this topic.”
