Anti-missile shield in Romania 'strictly defensive'
The elements of the anti-missile system that is to be installed in Romania will be of strictly defensive nature and will contribute to an increased defense capacity of Europe, amid rising threats from nuclear proliferation and short and medium-range missiles. Such statements were made by Romanian representatives at a meeting for Moldo-Romanian consultations on current security issues, held on Thursday, February 18, in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The consultations addressed in particular the subject of the ant-missile shield in Europe, which will involve Romania as well. In this context, the Romanian representatives underlined that the decision to take part in the anti-missile shield project concerns Romania's national security and the collective security of the Nato allies.
It was stressed that the terrestrial interceptors that would be installed on Romanian territory would use non-nuclear kinetic warheads to destroy potential targets. This would provide anti-missile coverage to Romania and ally countries in the region, as well as to non-allied countries like Moldova, taking regional security to another level.
The consultations revealed the “biased and artificial” nature of some allegations spread by certain media outlets, including the allegations that the anti-missile shield could result in risks rather than protection.
