ANSA investigates allegations of worm-infested fish at kindergarten 177

Inspections carried out by the Food Safety National Agency (ANSA) at kindergarten 177 in Chisinau did not find any non-compliant products. The institution was verified after the former director complained to the President’s Office, alleging that among the food products that reach the children's table there were worm-infested fish, rotten meat and bread with metallic elements.

In a press conference held on August 8, ANSA deputy director Ion Toma said that the kindergarten was checked before and after the irregularities were reported. “We went to the kindergarten to gather all the information regarding the potential deliveries of substandard food. ANSA didn’t discover, nor was it notified of any issues at the kindergarten”, Ion Toma said.

The ANSA deputy director stated that the operator that delivers food to the kindergarten is obliged to meet some requirements concerning food safety. "Employees in charge of the kindergarten are required to examine each batch of products and identify the quality products," Ion Toma added.

He stated that kindergarten employees didn’t confirm the existence of non-compliant food. Also, Ion Toma said that until August 7, no violations were registered, even at the economic agent who delivers the food. "If we find out violations, we will apply sanctions. Today, we do our best to identify and clarify the non-conformities in terms of quality and food safety,” ANSA deputy director says.

Ela Malai, ANSA acting director, said that after investigations all the information regarding the situation at kindergarten 177 will be made available.

Ala Revenco, the president of the Solidarity Parents Association, also stated that there is a need for a control system for parents as regards the quality of food delivered to children.
