After a large fire at a silo of the Giurgiulești International Free Port that occurred several days ago, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations announced that a new silo loaded with sunflower groats started to burn.
“The rescuers and firefighters are working at the scene to localize and extinguish the fire. Five teams with 20 employees of the Inspectorate are now on the spot. Rescuers work to ensure security and prevent situations of risk,” the Inspectorate’s press officer Liliana Pușcașu has told IPN.
According to reports, the second storage tower has a capacity of 1,100 tonnes. It was half full. No one was hurt in the fire and no risks to the locals and local infrastructure were identified.
The Environmental Agency said the air pollution level in the region remains high due to the content of phenol. Its reference laboratory took samples of air in different places of the port, for different weather conditions, and the results will be made public later.
A similar fire occurred on January 16. As a result of the smoldering of over 1,000 tonnes of sunflower groats, the container collapsed. Then, the firefighters managed to localize the fire in several hours, but the blaze was fully put out in several days.
