Animal shelter in Ciorescu may be closed

The only donor who finances the animal shelter working in Ciorescu village of Chisinau municipality does not have money to maintain it further so that it might be closed, the head of the Moldovan-German charity animal protection foundation “Laika” Tatiana Manastarli has told Info-Prim Neo. There are 60 dogs and 20 cats at the shelter now and the administration is trying to place them with villagers. According to Tatiana Manastarli, the shelter was opened six years ago and has been financed by the Germany donor Christa Schechtl in the period. The homeless animals brought to the shelter were fed and looked after. Homes were found for 550 of them, including abroad. The shelter’s personnel include a veterinary and six employees. During six years, there have been sterilized about 2,500 cats and dogs. “The problem must be solved. We will together consider how,” said mayor of Ciorescu Constantin Scripnic. The Chisinau City Hall intends to build a shelter for stray dogs with a veterinary clinic and a cemetery for dogs in Rascani district. Under a preliminary plan, initially the shelter’s capacity will be 500 places and will be later extended to 1,500-2,000.
