Animal rights association accuses Chisinau dogcatchers of killing the dogs caught for sterilization

The association for the defense of stray animals in Chisinau is accusing the Motorsanitation division, the municipal agency responsible of waste management in the city, of having killed the dogs that were caught on Tuesday for sterilization under a municipal campaign. The agency is denying the allegations, Info-Prim Neo. The association's chairperson Valentina Dudnic told reporters that shortly after the City Hall's meeting earlier that morning she went to the compound to take over the animals that had been caught for sterilization, as agreed with the municipality. “I was unable to enter the compound for several hours. But after I finally got in, I saw fresh traces of blood, feces, and fur”, said Valentina Dudnic. According to Dudnic, the Motorsanitation staff told her the animals caught in the morning had been released shortly, without giving reasons why. “Not a single dog caught on Tuesday morning was killed”, Motorsanitation's manager Tudor Maniv told reporters. Chisinau Deputy Mayor Nistor Grozavu assured the journalists he would go to the compound to inspect the scene for himself as soon as the City Council's meeting was over. Nistor Grozavu also said that he would likely sign an ordinance to suspend the sterilization campaign for a week, as the responsibilities for the campaign haven't been assigned clearly. Chisinau is home to an estimated of 30,000 stray dogs. The sterilization costs in the case of one dog are around 300 lei and the municipality is willing to spend 7 million lei for this purpose.
