Angela Merkel: Germany will continue to support efforts to build democratic society

Germany will further support people’s efforts to build a democratic and just society, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated in a discussion with President Maia Sandu, noting she will follow attentively the related developments in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

According to President Sandu, Germany is an important development partner of the Republic of Moldova and Moldova aims to intensify the political dialogue and to strengthen the economic relations.

The two officials discussed the epidemiological situation in the Republic of Moldova and Germany’s experience in stopping the spread of infection and instituting measures to support the economy during the crisis. Also, as Maia Sandu stated, they conferred on the post-COVID 19 economic recovery.

According to the presidential press service, Maia Sandu thanked for the constant support offered by Angela Merkel and Germany to the citizens of Moldova and to the democratic values in the Republic of Moldova. In particular, she expressed her gratitude for the assistance provided last year in the fight against the pandemic and for the contribution to the COVAX Facility through which Moldova benefits from free vaccines.

Maia Sadu said that they also discussed the political crisis in Moldova and she underlined that the Moldovan citizens want real reforms, the ensuring of the rule of law and the punishment of the corrupt persons, but such reforms can be done only by a Parliament that would represent the people’s will.
