Andrian Candu: We will not be concerned if PSRM does not take part in elections

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the Democratic Party will not yield to the pressure exerted by the Party of Socialists (PSRM) over the mixed-member electoral system and there are enough votes in the legislative body to adopt the uninominal voting system. The issue was developed in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“If the PSRM does not want to take part in elections, it can do so. We will be even glad and will have a bigger majority. Many do not understand what the mixed -member electoral system is. But the Socialists in the future elections bank namely on the name and doctrine of the party and they are afraid of the uninominal voting system,” stated Candu.

The Speaker accused the Socialists of intentionally delaying the replacement of the electoral system. “They do this to cause uncertainty and to hamper the process of changing the voting system. The Venice Commission was also burdened as it has to examine two bills instead of one. It is also a burden to the MPs,” he said.

Candu denied the accusations that the arrest of heavyweights of the Liberal Party over alleged acts of corruption are related to the Liberals’ refusal to vote for the uninominal voting system. “Justice is one thing, while the political process is another thing. We have enough votes to introduce the uninominal voting system without the Liberal colleagues,” he stated.

Andrian Candu made it clear that the uninominal voting system could be adopted by September. “Given that the electoral legislation cannot be modified one year before the elections, the changes to the Election Code should be voted not later than this September,” noted the Speaker.
