Andrian Candu to MEPs: Progress was made in implementing Association Agreement

The progress made by Moldova in implementing the Association Agreement and the shortcomings in the areas covered by the roadmap were discussed in a meeting of Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu and the European Parliament’s delegation to the Moldova – EU Parliamentary Association Committee that is led by MEP Andi Cristea. Andrian Candu noted that particular results were achieved in the process of implementing the Association Agreement and amending the legislation, but parliamentary control is needed over the implementation of laws, IPN reports.

According to the legislature’s press service, the official reiterated the authorities’ determination to fulfill the commitments assumed before the EU and in accordance with the priority reform action roadmap. “By the end of July, Parliament aims to adopt the legislation related to the Law on the Prosecution Service, the energy package and the package of laws aimed at improving the situation in the banking system. We do not want to wait until autumn. We want to have a new document, with actions that we must take in the second half of the year, by July 31, when the deadline indicated in the roadmap expires,” stated Andrian Candu.

Among other subjects discussed were the coming of an IMF mission next week, the initiatives to amend the Constitution in Parliament and to adopt a new Broadcasting Code, the audit of the National Agency for Energy Regulation and the acute necessity of strengthening the independence of the National Bank of Moldova.

The MEPs welcomed the progress made by Moldova, encouraging the authorities to fully implement the Association Agreement so as to restore the people’s confidence and improve the living conditions. They suggested more actively engaging civil society in the decision-making process at the level of Parliament and Government. The Committee’s co-chairman Andi Cristea said the country’s progress will be analyzed in a meeting in Brussels on September 26. “Stability is essential for the Republic of Moldova and is a good precondition for doing reforms,” he stated.

The European Parliament’s delegation consists of MEPs Andi Cristea, Michal Boni, Norica Nicolai and Petras Auštrevičius. These are visiting Moldova during May 18-19.
