When the political class cannot reach an agreement over the name of the official language, there is no other solution than finding out the people’s will, said Deputy Head of Parliament Andrian Candu, quoted by IPN.

“The Constitution can be amended in Parliament by vote, but in this case it is impossible as the Communist MPs will not join in. There will be a lot of discussions and speculations. Some will say that it is s a purely juridical, philosophic decision. The subject must be put up for a referendum. Society is divided, as the scientists and politicians are,” the Democrat said in the program “Fabrica” on Publika TV channel.

The Constitutional Court on December 5 decided that in case of divergences between the texts of the Declaration of Independence and of the Constitution, the primary text of the Declaration will prevail. This refers also to the official language. The Declaration of Independence says it is Romanian, while the Constitution provides that the official language is Moldovan, based on the Latin script. Andrian Candu said the people’s will can defeat the Declaration of Independence.

In the same program, historian Leonid Tabara said that a survey published last December showed that 68% of the respondents consider that they speak Moldovan. “Constitution is the fundamental law of the state. It is the people that decide, not the scientists. The right to name the language belongs to the people. It is opportune holding a referendum in 2014,” he stated.

The chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu also said earlier that the best solution is to hold a referendum where the people would decide the name of the official language. The Liberal-Democrats share this opinion. The Communists condemn the Constitutional Court’s decision, while the Liberals demand immediately modifying the Constitution in Parliament.
