The Platform “Dignity and Truth” has no more reasons to insists on holding a referendum and to protest in connection with this because the problems addressed by this no longer exist, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu stated in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
“I understand that there is the people’s will and more than 400,000 signatures were collected. But the issue regarding the direct election of the President was solved. The people wanted to elect the Head of State themselves and on October 30 we will have presidential elections. The second question was also solved. We have a bill to amend the Constitution and remove parliamentary immunity. As regards the reduction in the number of MPs, I can say nothing here. There are different opinions. The main issue is to form parliamentary groups and to promote voters’ interests. I think it is not so important whether there are 101 or 71 MPs. What is important is for these to be upright and to work,” said the Speaker.
He noted that the Democratic Party, of which he forms part, hasn’t yet designated a candidate for the presidential elections and the name of this could be made public in a month. “We will make known the name of our candidate within an optimal timeframe. We are waiting for the conclusions of the Venice Commission concerning the Constitutional Court’s decision to restore the direct election of the Head of State, which we should receive by the end of May,” stated Andrian Candu.
