Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the 13 Liberal and Liberal-Democratic MPs betrayed their voters when they left the assembly hall before the bill to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration in it was put to the vote, IPN reports.

The official told the journalists that the PDM is seriously considering the possibility of holding a referendum on the introduction of the “European integration” in the Constitution. To save money, if it’s possible from legal viewpoint, the referendum could be held on February 24, 2019, together with the parliamentary elections. “This vote that wasn’t successful today should be given a chance at a referendum. We hope this mistake will be repaired by the people’s will,” stated Andrian Candu.

In a press release, the PDM expressed its regret at the fact that the PL and PLDM, which declare themselves pro-European, refused to vote for enshrining the European course in the Constitution. “The Socialists’ and Communists’ hostile attitude to the European integration was something predictable, but in the case of the Liberals and Liberal-Democrats this is an unexpected transformation. This is political cowardice on the part of the PL and PLDM. We think the way in which they turned their back on the European integration today enabled the PCRM and PSRM to score an undeserved victory in Parliament and this way they gave a blow to the pro-European voters of our country,” stated the party.

The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration objective in it failed. The MPs of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and the Party of Communists didn’t support the bill. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional initiative is carried by the votes of 67 MPs.
