A part of the constitutional provisions are outdated and need to be modified, Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said in the talk show “Place for dialogue” on the public TV channel “Radio Moldova”, IPN reports.
“We need to review those articles of the fundamental law that refer to the immunity of MPs and judges, the prosecutor general’s appointment, the election of the head of state and the name of the language. There are no concerns in this respect. Even the Constitution of the U.S. underwent changes in time,” stated Candu.
As to the election of the head of state, the Speaker said this is an issue for Moldova and it will be most probably resolved by a referendum. As regards the prosecution service, Andrian Candu said that the prosecutor general should be named by the head of state, at the suggestion of the Supreme Council of Prosecutors. “Thus, the appointment of the prosecutor general will no longer depend on the political class,” he stated.
The Head of Parliament noted that he is for the limitation of the immunity of judges and prosecutors. “All the citizens are equal before the law. The immunity of judges must refer only to the cases examined by these, while the immunity of MPs must refer only to their political activity. The immunity is out of question when a judge or an MP is caught driving under the influence,” stated Candu.
Asked about the demands put forward by the people protesting in the Great National Assembly Square, the Speaker said these are not welcome in the current context. “The elections are a democratic exercise and a fundamental right. In the current context, the early elections would be a failure that would lead to an institutional blockage. Over the last few years, we had elections very often. The people are tired,” he stated.
