Andrian Candu comments on enshrining of European course in Constitution

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the votes of the MPs of the Democratic Party and the European People’s Party of Moldova are enough to adopt the legislative initiative that envisions the enshrining of the European course in the Constitution. They will have discussions on the issue with the other parliamentary groups during the next two weeks, IPN reports.

The Speaker expressed his confidence that the MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Liberal Party will support the amendments. He said he cannot say the same about the Communist and Socialist MPs, but they will try to discuss with the leaders of the two groups.

“I’m confident that we will find the suitable arguments to persuade all the colleagues who consider themselves pro-Western, pro-European to adopt these changes in the Constitution as we do not have much time. We must adopt the amendments to the Constitution and then send them for promulgation. I expect President Dodon will not promulgate them immediately and will send them back to Parliament. Time will be spent and we are thus limited to adopt important laws to amend the Constitution or organic laws by November 30,” stated Andrian Candu.

The legislative initiative that envisions the enshrining of the European course in Moldova’s Constitution was submitted by a group of MPs and was approved by the Cabinet at the end of this January. The bill provides that the procedure for subscribing to the constitutive treaties of the European Union will be decided by Parliament by an organic law.
