Andrian Candu about eventual coalitions after parliamentary elections

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, who comes third on the Democratic Party’s list of candidates for MP in the national constituency, said he will not run in a single-member constituency. As to the eventual coalitions in the legislature after the parliamentary elections, Andrian Candu said he cannot imagine a coalition with the Party of Socialists and he considers those from the electoral bloc ACUM are closer to the PDM, IPN reports.

According to the Speaker, there are different opinions and solutions and discussions are to be held in this regard. “Definitely, the Democratic Party will be open to what the formation of a coalition means so that this ensures development, stability and continuity in the Republic of Moldova and what we started so well during the past three years continues. Surely, the European integration remains our target and objective, especially because Romania will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2019. So, first of all we should have free and fair elections recognized internationally and validated by the Constitutional Court and then we will have three months to form a Government, but I hope we will form it much faster and there will be a productive atmosphere in Parliament,” Andrian Candu stated in a news conference.

Andrian Candu, who is the vice president of the PDM, said he cannot imagine a coalition with the Party of Socialists. “We are very different and I cannot imagine how we can agree a program with the colleagues from the Socialist group at practical level. That’s why I said that those from ACUM or the other parties, or the other MPs, I would say pro-Western, who will enter Parliament are closer to us. But we will have discussions after the elections,” he noted.

The Speaker said that during his eight years in politics he learned a lesson – never say never. “That’s why we avoid being categorical, but I do not see how we could work with the parliamentary group of the Party of Socialists given our doctrines, creeds and what we feel and want and set as an objective,” he stated.

As to the Democratic Party’s list of candidates for MP in the national constituency,  Andrian Candu said this includes persons who work in different areas, together with businessmen and state functionaries. Asked why Democratic MP Marian Lupu was not put on the list and about the rumors that a post is being prepared for him, the Speaker said he does not know about any post. “I know discussions are held, including with Mister Lupu, concerning his involvement in the activities he plans. I can speculate, as others do, that the list can be yet modified until January 24. In general, the content of the lists and the order on them can be yet modified until January 24,” he noted.
