Andrei Volentir: CEC is ready for elections this year

The Central Election Commission (CEC) is ready from logistic and financial viewpoints to organize presidential elections this year, the Commission’s secretary Andrei Volentir stated in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“Last year we had local elections. The 4 000 laptops were to be distributed to schools through the agency of the Ministry of Education. I’m glad that we didn’t manage to do it. We expected that a referendum will be held this year and thus budgeted additional financial resources for organizing an electoral exercise,” stated Andrei Volentir.

As to the signatures collected by the Platform “Dignity and Truth” for holding a referendum on the amendment of the Constitution, the CEC secretary said the part concerning the election and dismissal of the head of state is no longer topical following the March 4 decision by the Constitutional Court. “There are two more aspects regarding the amendment of the Constitution for which signatures are being collected separately, but within the same campaign. These are the annulment of the parliamentary immunity and the reduction in the number of MPs from 101 to 71. If everything is fine, the referendum will have to be held,” he stated.

Andrei Volentir also said that 22 articles of the Election Code are to be modified following the decision taken by the Constitutional Court on March 4.
