Andrei Popov’s withdrawal from PDM is welcome, experts

The leaving by Andrei Popov from the Democratic Party (PDM) is welcome, but it is highly improbable that his gesture will be followed by others and that the situation in the party will change. The issue was developed in a talk show on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Politologist Angela Colatski considers the PDM is in need of internal purification. “It is rather improbable that Popov will be followed by other Democrats. There are also persons of integrity in the PDM. But these are few in number or do not have the courage to oppose. I think the system was created so as to promote blackmailable persons, while the upright persons to remain in the shadow,” she stated.

Political analyst Victor Ciobanu also believes that the PDM has now few members of integrity, while those who remained will be put in the situation to leave the party. “The PDM turned into a gang led from behind by one person, who feels fine in his position. This person was included up on the PDM’s list of candidates for elections overnight and later became the party’s deputy chairman and an MP,” he said.

On March 13, Andrei Popov announced that he vacated the seat of Moldova’s Ambassador to Austria and left the PDM. “During several months, I tried to influence the party’s course. The PD had an enormous potential, while now “PD” is a word of reproach. We say PD and mean Vlad Plahotniuc. We say Vlad Plahotniuc and mean PD. The decisions in the PD are taken to promote corporate interests,” Popov said at a press conference.
