The Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA) designated the party’s leader Andrei Nastase as a candidate for the post of Head of State. Such a decision was taken in the March 20 meeting of the party’s National Political Council. In a news conference at IPN, representatives of the Council said the presidential elections must be organized within two months of March 23, when the post of President falls vacant.
The members of the Council consider that early parliamentary elections and the referendum on the amendment of the Constitution should be held in parallel with the presidential elections. The Council made a call to all the democratic, reformist and anti-oligarchic political forces to choose a common candidate for the presidency so as not to disperse the voters.
Speaking about the party’s decision to field him for the presidency of Moldova, Andrei Nastase said he perceives this thing as a mandate to initiate discussions with other possible candidates. He thus aims to find the best solution for the possible presidential elections.
Asked by the journalists with what forces the party could select a common candidate for the presidency, Andrei Nastase said that he had discussions on the issue with Maia Sandu and could discuss it with some of the members of the Liberal Democratic Party and with the party of Iurie Leanca, if this is taken out of captivity. The Party of Socialists is also ready to take part in the discussions to designate a common candidate for President.
Andrei Nastase also said that if the constitutional provisions are not respected and the Head of State is not chosen within two months of the expiration of the incumbent’s term in office, the party will intensify the peaceful antigovernment protests. They will call on civil society and the protesting opposition to ignore the political colors and to massively protest ageist the oligarchic dictatorship.
PPPDA deputy head Chiril Motpan said the National Political Council decided that the party in the immediate future will focus on the drafting and promotion of the bill on lustration. Under this law, which envisions the purification of the political class, those who will be promoted to public executive posts will have to meet such criteria as honesty and meritocracy.
Another deputy head of the party Inga Grigoriu said the protest movement initiated by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” will continue to put up resistance to the ’oligarchic forces’. Namely owing to the protests mounted last year by the Platform, the whole world found out about the problems faced by Moldova.
The members of the PPPDA said that in the immediate period they will work out a set of proposals for improving the socioeconomic situation in Moldova.
