Andi Cristea: Union is possible within common European area

The current situation in Moldova, which is far from being a pink one, makes an increasing number of young people there to join the pro-unionist movement, the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Moldova, Romanian MEP Andi Cristea said in the talk show “European horizon” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The unionist project gives birth to bright emotions and interest on both sides of the Prut River. As a Romanian, I understand these young people. It is their right and history is on their side. But in Chisinau the unionist project is considered an attack on the state. Those from the state institutions do not approve of the unionist movement,” stated Andi Cristea.

The MEP considers Moldova’s union with Romania can happen only by Moldova’s integration into the EU, while the union with Romania with the aim of entering the EU is not possible. “A state that is an EU and NATO member will not join with a state that has a foreign army on its territory. Moldova can be together with Romania only within the common European area, where there are no borders. Now Moldova does not have the status of candidate for accession to the EU at least. Instead, it has an Association Agreement with the EU and its implementation will accelerate Moldova’s European integration. The Moldovan politicians should adopt a more serious and consistent approach,” he stated.
