Andi Cristea inquires about future progress report for Moldova

Romanian MEP Andi Cristea, who heads European Parliament’s Delegation for Moldova, addressed a letter to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini concerning the publication of the future progress report for Moldova. He asked when the European Commission will publish the given assessment document on Moldova, IPN reports.

According to a press release of the MEP, the last available report on Moldova was published in March 2015 and refers to the developments of 2014. “Meanwhile, the European Neighborhood Policy was modified and the European Commission’s approach changed, the developments in each state being analyzed depending on the achievement of the objectives set and assumed in concert with each of these states,” said the MEP.

He also said that a progress report is important both for the European institutions and for the governments of the given states. Such a report is like a calibration instrument that shows objectively the existing progress or problems.

Contacted by IPN, the executive director of the Foreign Policy Association (APE) Victor Chirila said this request by the MEP is welcome. The progress reports for Moldova have been compiled since 2005, when the country started to form part of the European Neighborhood Policy.

Victor Chirila presumes that this report will reveal the worrisome involutions in Moldova. “Things in Moldova have developed poorly in all areas - either we speak about the justice sector reform or the functioning of institutions, political stability and economy. All these bad developments will be reflected,” he stated.

According to the APE executive director, the European Union, it is reports, analyzes particular progress, but also possible shortcomings. In the future report, the balance will incline towards the shortcomings. The future progress report for Moldova will not be different from the conclusions of the EU Foreign Affairs Council of this February, where a number of conditions for Moldova were stated.
