Anatoli Kaminski elected president of Transnistrian Supreme Soviet
Anatoli Kaminski was named as president of the Supreme Soviet of Transnistria on July 22. The post fell vacant after Evgheni Shevchuk tendered his resignation on July 8. Until recently, Kaminski was vice president of the legislative body of the Transnistrian region, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the news agency “Novyi Reghion” II.
Kaminski was the only candidate for this post. He was put up by the parliamentary group “Obnovlenie”. Thirty-two of the 34 MPs attending voted for him.
In his speech to the deputies, the new Speaker asked for assistance in maintaining the positions of the Supreme Soviet, whose duty is to adopt laws to improve the living conditions of the population.
Evgheni Shevchuk resigned, saying that he does not accept the new version of the Constitution of the region proposed by the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov. “This document will lead to the destruction of the state. They try to empower a single person who will decide on practically all the elective posts,” Shevchuk said.
