Anatol Țăranu: At the Congress, PDM should have made a proposal to ACUM to govern

At the extraordinary Congress of the Democratic Party that took place last week, the group should have put forward a firm proposal to the ACUM bloc to jointly govern, as to remove the Socialists from the ruling coalition. This point of view belongs to political commentator Anatol Țăranu. In his opinion, this should have been done as to cement the European path of the Republic of Moldova. In order to achieve this goal, the PDM should have made serious concessions to the ACUM bloc.

"Such a proposal could have considerably rehabilitated the Democratic Party, it could have rehabilitated its image or, at least, it would be the start of an image restoration process", Anatol Țăranu said during the Publika TV program "Fabrika".

The political commentator believes that the recent extraordinary Congress of the Democratic Party generated more questions than answers. According to him, the Congress had to answer to the question whether the PDM remains on the political scene as a force that will shape the political landscape of Moldova in the future or will it share the fate of all those parties that have risen to prominence for a while, then after a spectacular failure were buried by the sands of time. "I would use the metaphor - the Congress of the withered roses. The question is whether the PDM will be reborn or will it completely dry out? During the Congress, I did not see how PDM wants to be reborn. Speeches were held, yet no projects were put forward”, says Anatol Țăranu.

According to him, at the Congress, a lot of references were made about the previous Filip government. Anatol Țăranu points out that Vladimir Plahotniuc's name, former leader of the PDM, was not referenced at all, even though during his leadership the party registered the best electoral results in its political history. In his opinion, this was an attempt to avoid an extremely uncomfortable topic for the party, however, "hiding your head in the sand is not the best option". "I expected the Democratic Party to launch projects by which it will admit that "yes, we were wrong, mistakes were made, but now we are overcoming our mistakes and we want to rebuild the party on the European path of social democracy and in order to achieve this, we will work on the following projects…”", says Anatol Țăranu.

Journalist Ștefan Secăreanu thinks that if the ACUM bloc will continue to work with the Socialist Party, thus it is unknown whether the PDM's potential proposal would have been considered. At the same time, Ștefan Secăreanu also believes that the Democrats should have put forward a proposal to ACUM in order to attempt to diminish the growing influence of the Socialists. "If the people still monitor PDM, it means that the PDM is expected to recover and to oppose the current power structure", the journalist said.

The new leadership of the PDM was elected at the extraordinary Congress, which took place on Saturday, September 7. Thus, Pavel Filip became the new president of the PDM.
