Ana Gutu: Special status for Transnistria means Moldova’s geopolitical suicide

“Mo matter what party suggests granting a special status to the separatist region from the left side of the Nistru River, either the ruling Democratic Party or the Liberal Democratic Party that is in opposition, the resolution of the so-called Transnistrian dispute by granting a special status to this region will actually mean Moldova’s geopolitical suicide,” the leader of “The Right” Ana Gutu said in the public debate “What are the chances of unfreezing the frozen Nistru conflict?” that was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

The politician said any successful attempt to reintegrate the Transnistrian region into the Republic of Moldova will mean the definite removal of this region from the Euro-Atlantic map, while the aspirations to unite with Romania and integrate into the Euro-Atlantic values will come to an end.

Ana Gutu noted that when the quality of life on the right side of the Nistru is improved, the inhabitants of Transnistria will want to reunify with the rest of the constitutional territory of the Republic of Moldova. The Moldovan authorities should offer homes or other opportunities to the people from the left side of the Nistru who want to move to the right side. “After 25 years of the start of the aggression war of Russia against Moldova, with the involvement of the political factor, we should ask ourselves what we will do next because de iure the territory from the left side of the Nistru belongs to the Republic of Moldova, while de facto it hasn’t been controlled for 25 years,” she stated.

According to Gutu, the 5+2 format talks are based on the small steps policy aimed at solving the problems of the people as our citizens cannot travel freely from one side to another. “The complicity that exists between the administration of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic and some of the politicians-businessmen from the right side is evident. It’s not a secret that representatives of Transnistria’s KGB live in Chisinau, have apartments, private houses and property here, travel freely and are not arrested,” stated the politician.

She considers the Republic of Moldova should build a border on the Nistru and freeze the 5+2 format talks because the territory from the left side of the Nistru will no longer be recovered and the negotiations are only simulated. The border on the Nistru should be secured administratively by setting up checkpoints of the Moldovan constitutional authorities, by clearly delimiting the territory controlled by the Republic of Moldova. Afterward, the free movement of the people from both sides of the Nistru should be ensured.

The leader of “The Right” said the solving of the problems faced by the people, by ensuring their economic and social security and the observance of the human rights by using national and international democratic instruments, is a real solution to the Transnistrian conflict.

The public debate “What are the chances of unfreezing the frozen Nistru conflict?” is the 71st installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
