Amnesty International Moldova condemns violations of human rights in Belarus

Amnesty International Moldova is sympathetic with the Belarusians and asks the Minsk authorities to eliminate legal provisions allowing to intimidate activists of the civil society for organizing or attending actions by non-registered NGOs. The organization picketed the Belarusian Embassy in Chisinau on Thursday, asking for the respect of the international right to free assembly, association and opinion, Info-Prim Neo reports. Stefan Popov, a volunteer of the organization, says can't watch indifferently at violating the human rights and hopes someone form the Belarusian embassy will notice them, albeit through the window, and would undertake something. The Belarusian law forbids to activity of non-registered NGOs which are also liable to penal punishment in jail up to two years. Amnesty International takes pride in announcing that the conscience detainee Zmitser Dashkevich, jailed for 1 ½ years for participating in actions organized by non-registered NGOs in Belarus, was freed earlier on January 23, 2008. Amnesty International has been acting in Moldova for 15 years, and joins 180 members. The Belarusian Embassy to Moldova has made no comments concerning the protests.
