Amnesty International Moldova collects signatures for supporting torture victims

Amnesty International Moldova (AIM) representatives collected on Monday, June 26, in the square of the Organ Hall in Chisinau’s downtown, signatures for supporting victims of torture. The action is organized on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, designated by the UN General Assembly on June 26 in 1997. The coordinator of AIM volunteers and campaigns, Veaceslav Balan, announced that about 800 signatures were collected for supporting the persons tortured in the prisons of Guantanamo, Cuba, Gambia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Later, these signatures will be transmitted to the president of the four mentioned states. According to Balan, the young men, especially young women, were the most active. He highlighted that such actions are organized for the 6-th year already, including other countries of the world. The statistics show that only 1/3 of AIM requirements are complied with, another 1/3 are complied partly, and the other countries do not react at all. Amnesty International is an independent apolitical organization, pleading for protection and awareness of fundamental human rights formulated in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. It was founded in 1961 in Great Britain and has at the moment 1,800,000 members in 150 countries and territories of the world.
