AMN says defeating communists was a great accomplishment

The Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN) Party considers it has accomplished one of its major political missions – to defeat, by joint efforts of other democratic forces, the communists in the local elections and to limit their power at local level, AMN leader Serafim Urecheanu told today a press conference. The outcomes of the local general elections have built grounds for success in the future parliamentary elections and for taking power by the democratic forces, Urecheanu stated. In addition, the AMN believes that the electors’ vote placed the party on the top position of the democratic spectrum, which made it assume the responsibility of organising alliances between non-communist groups in local authorities. With such alliances formed, the democratic forces took power in 22 out of the country’s 34 districts, and in other two – Rezina and Rascani – the situation is still uncertain, although, according to Urecheanu, in Rascani the opposition is likely to form a coalition. Referring to the results obtained by the AMN in elections, the leader of the party said it won 189 mayor’s seats (about 21% of the total), 220 mandates in district and city councils (19.6%), and 1,987 mandates of village councilman (19.5%). AMN is part of the leadership of over two thirds of territorial administrations, with the party’s representatives chairing 14 districts and deputy-chairing other 7. Moldova Noastra believes that it would have scored better, as the other democratic forces did, if it benefited from a favourable political conjuncture and a fair election campaign.
