For the European Union, the uniform and equal development of all regions in the Republic of Moldova is important. This is the answer given by the head of the EU Delegation in Chișinău, Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks, who explained why the European Union continues to invest in Gagauzia, even though 95% of local residents voted against the referendum to introduce the European vector into the country's Constitution, IPN reports.
Commenting on a press article, Jānis Mažeiks addressed several statements related to the EU accession process, including myths about the risks citizens may face, as well as their culture and language.
"I believe the EU can be a very important partner for the Gagauz people. Why? Because in the European Union, this diversity is appreciated," noted Jānis Mažeiks.
"If we analyze life in the EU, we will see many examples showing how small nations and ethnic minorities can support their diversity with the help of the EU," the ambassador added.
For the EU, the diplomat emphasized, it is important for all countries within the European family to develop and support their diversity. And this does not mean imposing a certain model. For the EU, it is important that every person benefits from the right and opportunity to be themselves.
"EU countries are different, but for us, it is very important that the life of the EU and its citizens is not marked by discrimination and that there is equality of rights," explained Jānis Mažeiks.
According to the ambassador, the EU will continue to implement projects in Gagauzia. These will include economic projects, support for small businesses, as well as media projects. Furthermore, energy efficiency projects for schools and kindergartens will continue.
"I hope that over time, the people of Gagauzia will better understand where their true friends are and where the future of Gagauzia and the Republic of Moldova lies," Jānis Mažeiks further stated.
