Clashes occurred at the Constitutional Court, where the examination of two requests for constitutional review of the new provisions of the Tax Code continues. A number of people gathered in front of the Court, together with the governor of ATU Gagauzia Yevgenia Guțul. A person tried to prevent their access to the institution, calling them separatists and traitors. The police had to intervene to calm things down, IPN reports.
One of the requests was submitted by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, while the other one by a group of MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists. The authors ask the Court to verify the constitutionality of Law No. 285 of October 5, 2023 to amend Article 6 of the Tax Code.
Article 6 of the Tax Code stipulates that ATU Gagauzia must refund VAT from its own budget, not from the national budget as it happened before the adoption of the new provisions. The challenged law was published in the Official Gazette on October 21 and entered into force on November 1, 2023.
The examination of the two requests takes place in several sessions. Bashkan Yevgenia Guțul came with several messages to the Court, asking that the decisions shouldn’t be politicized and be detrimental to the population.
The same thing was today demanded by a number of citizens, who chanted in front of the Constitutional Court. Activist Vasile Sinigur also showed up and tried to disperse the demonstrators, but was soon taken away by police.
