Approximately 900 explosive devices dating from World War II were found and neutralized by bomb disposal teams of the National Army on Moldova’s territory last year, IPN reports.
According to Colonel Mihail Buclis, of the Land Forces Command, teams consisting of members of the Bomb Disposal Battalion and the Brigades “Moldova” and “Dacia” carried out 171 missions during which they detonated 868 explosive devices in a controlled way.
Most of the devices – artillery shells, aircraft bombs, mines and grenades – were discovered in Stefan Voda, Causeni, Criuleni and Ungheni districts and in Balti and Chisinau municipality.
The largest arsenal was found at a building site on Aerodromului St in Balti last November. The explosives were transported to the local Training Center and destroyed in conditions of maximum security.
Last December, the team of the Bomb Disposal Battalion “Codru” defused five aircraft bombs weighing 50 kg. These were found at a sand quarry in Puhaceni village of Anenii Noi district.
The Ministry of Defense warns the citizens to inform the local authorities if they come across explosives or presume such could exist in a particular area and not to touch unidentified explosive devices.
