Almost 400 transplant operations performed in Moldova last year

About 400 transplant operations were performed in Moldova in 2014. Of these, 328 were bone graft transplant operations.

“Last year saw a positive trend as regards hepatic transplantation. Thus, the figure rose from three liver transplant surgeries in 2013 to ten in 2014. Of these, six were made with liver taken from donors with dead brain, while four from living donors. There are cases when the relatives donate organs to save their close people. Most of the donors of tissue are persons who suffered a cardiac or reparatory arrest,” the director of the Transplant Agency of Moldova Igor Codreanu told a news conference.

Last year, there were also performed 87 skin transplant, 44 cornea transplant and 10 kidney transplant operations.

The head of the Surgery Department of the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “Nicolae Testemitanu”, former minister of health Vladimir Hotineanu said that two years after the launch of the transplant system in Moldova, the sustainable financing and the mentality of people, who should accept donation of organs from brain dead persons, are now the most serious challenges.

“The taking of organs from brain dead persons and the donation of these to persons in a critical state is a Christian deed. The people should better inform themselves and understand that this is a great quality act for those who can be saved. We launched the transplant system with transplantation of liver from a living donor, but the future of transplant in Moldova is the donation of organs from brain dead persons,” stated Hotineanu.

Currently, the waiting list for a liver transplant includes 55 persons, while for a kidney transplant - 37 persons.
