Alliance rating drops as Communists rise in latest poll
The rating of the ruling Alliance for European Integration dropped as the opposition Communist Party gained in popularity, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Moldovan Association of Sociologists and Demographers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the Communists would muster 30.8% of the popular vote, compared with 25.3% predicted by a similar poll in January.
The Liberal Democratic Party would gather 16.8%, compared with 19.7% in the previous poll. The Democratic Party scored 10% and 15.6%, respectively. The next is the Liberal Party with 7.7%, as opposed to 9% at the beginning of the year. The fourth component party of the Alliance, AMN, would gather 4.3%, down by 0.2 percentage point from the previous poll.
The percentage of the undecided respondents exceeded 19%.
Victor Mocanu, the chairman of the Association, estimated that the four parties that currently form the Alliance could move into opposition in the next parliament.
Concerning the constitutional referendum on September 5, 62.8% of the respondents expressed their intention to participate in it, as 22.3% said they wouldn't turn out and 14.9% abstained. 74.7% would vote 'yes' in the referendum, 9.6% would vote 'no', as 15.7% abstained.
The poll was conducted during 9-22 August 2010 on a sample of 1,594 people from 76 communities across Moldova, with a margin of error of 2.6 %.
