Alliance abandons referendum idea, presidential election date to be announced Feb.16

The Eurointegration Alliance has renounced the idea of holding a referendum anytime in the immediate future; instead, the date of the presidential election will be announced at the first sitting of the spring/summer session on February 16. This was announced at a Friday evening's talk show on national television featuring the Alliance leaders, Info-Prim Neo reports. Democratic Party president Marian Lupu stated that the resolution of the political crisis comes down to the election of the President. “We've discussed and analyzed what are the odds of a successful outcome for this referendum. We retain the idea of holding such a referendum as a mid-term project during the term of this parliament”, stated Marian Lupu. He added that the Alliance hasn't yet discussed any candidate for President. Lib-Dem leader Vlad Filat said that this decision is a way to solve the existing problems, but confirmed that the Constitution needs to be amended in the future. Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu suggested that his party didn't agree with this solution, but that it had to comply with the decision of the Alliance colleagues. He also declared that the mechanism of electing the President needs to be changed. The intention to hold a referendum was announced by the Alliance on January 15.
