All service members to be subject to psychological testing

Minister of Defense Alexandru Pânzari ordered that all the service members should be subject to psychological testing. The decision was taken following the May incident when a contract service member aged 26 died when falling from height.

“The decision is aimed at determining the psychological state or picture in the army,” press officer of the Ministry of Defense Ala Diaconu has told IPN.

The psychological examination of soldiers enrolled on a contract basis is performed on conscription, when submitting the documents and after admission to the Military Academy of the Armed Forces. The conscript soldiers and recruits are subject to such testing when they arrive in the unit and after the training period of six months.

“As a result of the psychological testing, all the results are analyzed and final reports are compiled with the identified problems, general conclusions and recommendations for improving the situation. Different group and individual psychological activities are planned in a move to prevent, attenuate or overcome the difficulties and solve the psychological, social problems experienced by service members and members of their families and within military staffs,” stated Ala Diaconu.

She noted that no signs of an offense were identified in the case of the service member who fell from the tenth floor of an apartment building in Chisinau on May 21. “Any alleged case of suicide is investigated by the police, which determines if this was a case of suicide or not,” said Ala Diaconu.

Chisinau Police Division press officer Natalia Stati said the investigation goes on and the results of the performed examinations are not yet ready. But the preliminary version is that the young man committed suicide.
