All flags in Chisinau will be flown at half mast on May 16

“All the flags in the municipality of Chisinau will be flown at half mast on May 16, when it is 200 years since the Tsarist Empire tore Bessarabia from Moldova’s body,” the head of the Chisinau mayor’s executive Lilian Carp said Monday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “May 16 is a black day as Bessarabia was separated from Romania on this day. The process of denationalizing the people living beyond the Nistru River started on May 16. We were detached from the process of forming the unitary Romanian state. On May 16, it is a black day, as on June 28. I suggest making it a mourning day and flying the flags at half mast on this day,” stated Lilian Carp. On May 16, 1812, the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire signed a peace treaty, at the end of the Russian-Turkish war of 1806 – 1812. The Ottoman Empire ceded the territory that the tsarist authorities later named Bessarabia to the Russian Empire.
