Alexandru Tanase: Changes in justice mean replacement of people

Moldova's legal system will be reformed when there is political will and the political situation allows it, Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase said in a program on Radio Free Europe, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. According to the minister, the discussions on the legal system were fragmented during the negotiations on the government program. It is evident that this decoupling had a clear political motivation. The reasons will become known after the Alliance for European Integration falls apart. “I think that when the ruling alliance splits up, the people will be able to speak. Now it is risky, but not because it is a secret. Things go bad and we should not make them more complicated. The changes in justice mean first of all the replacement of people. The laws, no matter how good they are, cannot produce results if the judges are corrupt and incompetent. We need political will,” said Alexandru Tanase. The minister also said that the parliamentary majority and the Presidential Office should have iron will and take tough action during eight-nine months so as to clean the legal system. “We must dismiss at least 70-80% of the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice. Nothing will change otherwise. This project cannot be launched without parliamentary supports. The Supreme Court of Justice should not be the only court that takes decisions. Justice should be done in courts, as in the whole world,” said Alexandru Tanase, adding that we cannot yet speak about iron political will. According to him, the implemented reforms focus on important aspects such as structure, procedures and simplifications.
