The former president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tănase commented on the messages transmitted in Chisinau by the European chief prosecutor Laura Codruța Koveși. According to him, the European official’s visit is a signal of support for the Republic of Moldova in connection with the granting of the EU candidate status. But Moldova is also urged to ensure the proper administration of justice and this should not be used as a cudgel in the fight against political opponents, IPN reports.
While in Chisinau on an official visit, Laura Codruța Koveși said the reforms last and the most difficult part is to change the mentality, not the systems. According to the ex-president of the Constitutional Court, the message is intended for the Moldovan political class.
“Codruța Koveși’s messages differ a lot from the messages of the government in Chisinau. The Moldovan government is focused primarily on the repressive component, on control over the prosecution service, the police, SIS, NAC, while Missis Koveși spoke about the change of mentality. These are absolutely distinct things. At European level, prosecutor means not an executioner who fulfills the orders of the government, but a magistrate who contributes to doing justice,” Alexandru Tănase stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
Moreover, he noted that the current situation in the country cannot be compared with that in Romania as justice in Moldova is administered only with regard to representatives of the opposition.
“In Romania, the judiciary is free. The judges are mainly able to take independent decisions. The atmosphere and problems in the Republic of Moldova are fully different from those in Romania. When Missis Koveși held office in Romania, how many public figures were investigated? If we analyze the situation in the Republic of Moldova, we see that we do not have any current official prosecuted or investigated. As a rule, the investigations cover persons who had been in power, persons from the opposition who said something or disturbed somehow. Missis Koveși’s message referred to the change of mentality principally of those who hold political power, not of a trolleybus driver. Changes should start from those who hold and exercise power in the state,” said the former president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru.
In Chisinau, European chief prosecutor Laura Codruța Koveși had meetings with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Natalia Gavriliția and Minister of Justice Sergiu Litvinenco. She noted that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office will be able to cooperate with Moldovan prosecutors in the investigation of cases of fraud and sequestration of property, such as “the billion theft”.
