Alexandru Slusari: Only 20% of stolen bank funds can be now recovered

The chairman of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the bank fraud Alexandru Slusari said the representatives of Kroll are disappointed with the work done by the Moldovan investigation bodies. According to him, these said they will come to Moldova again only when they see real political will to recover this money. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.

“In the meeting we had with them, they said this frankly. This means that nothing was done here during four years to recover this money. They said that if steps had been taken on warm trails in 2015 and this money recovery mechanism has been used, a significant amount of money would have been recovered (...) It was sabotage on the part of the previous government,” stated Alexandru Slusari.

He noted that if the process of recovering the money is dallied for another half a year, no money could be gotten back. The representatives of Kroll said only 20% of the embezzled amounts can be now recovered.

Economic expert Veaceslav Ioniță said the population should not scared by saying that 80% of the stolen bank funds were lost. “We should know that the liabilities of the three banks totaled 25 billion lei and the state offered guarantees of 11 billion lei and 14 billion lei is now uncovered. The 11 billion lei can be also recovered by selling the buildings of these banks or through the persons who brought the assets,” stated the expert, noting a separate investigation should be conducted to examine the process of selling the assets of the banks so as to see if these assets weren’t sold at half price.

Former MP Valeriu Munteanu said the people were given a lot of hope until now so that they started to exert pressure on the current government. The politicians should be sincere with the people and should explain to them the real situation as regards the bank fraud. “If they are not told that the money was spread all over the world and this cannot be detected, the pressure will be very great. The thieves can be yet jailed, but this will not happen if an expert from the EU is not appointed as Prosecutor General. If a Moldovan is named to this post, this will be burdened and will be unable to process these volumes of materials,” he noted.

Political commentator Roman Mihăeș said the Prosecutor General’s Office should be managed by a prosecutor who will have investigation officers, intelligence officers and prosecutors under his subordination and this should deal only with the theft of the US$ 1 billion from banks.
