The leader of the People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova (PPRM), ex-MP Alexandru Oleinic considers the way the Constitution Day is marked in Chisinau and in the country reveals the importance attached by the political class and society in general to the fundamental law, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the party.
“It is the political class that is responsible for this disrespect. Our politicians showed most of the times that they do not render the deserved homage to the Constitution of Moldova. To our shame, the Constitution Day found is with flags forgotten in storerooms and with a government preoccupied with vacations in the most luxurious resorts,” said the politician.
According to Alexandru Oleinic, the political class brutally intervened and made changes to the Constitution so that it serves their own interests. “Article 78, which describes the procedure for electing the head of state, was modified with impudence even if over 80% of the people want the head of state to be elected by direct vote, as opinion polls show,” he stated.
The chairman of the PPRM believes that the campaign to collect signatures to amend Article 78 carried out by the People’s Party will repair this injustice towards the Moldovans. “The people were deprived of the right to choose the head of state. Our duty, of the political class, is to restore this right,” said Alexandru Oleinic.
He voiced hope that the Constitution in the near future will really become the fundamental law that will ensure a prosperous future.
Moldova started to celebrate the Constitution Day on July 29, 1994.
