Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan said the events that happen in Ukraine are being monitored very attentively by the Moldovan authorities. According to him, the developments in Ukraine make the situation tense not only inside the country, but also outside it. The issue was developed in the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.
Alexandru Jizdan said the chiefs of the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Defense, the Security and Intelligence Service and other institutions were summoned by Prime Minister Pavel Filip to a meeting where they discussed the situation in the neighboring country. “We are attentively monitoring the developments in Ukraine, 24 hours of 24,” stated the minister.
“There was constituted a working group that has its professional eye on the events in Ukraine. We inform ourselves not only from external sources, but also through social networking sites. We are permanently in touch with those who can explain and can adopt high-quality decisions. We do not have the right to make a mistake as to the events in Ukraine.”
Alexandru Jizdan called on the Moldovan citizens who will go through border crossing points to be understanding and comply with the checking methods that will be applied as there could be other, more thorough checks. “We are permanently in contact with our colleagues from Ukraine. If it is possible, we will take all the measures to secure our border. There are now no signs that would alarm us,” he stated.
The Kerch Strait incident occurred on November 25, 2018 when a Russian cargo ship stopped three Ukrainian Navy vessels from passing under the Kerch Strait Bridge. Russia accused the Ukrainian ships of illegally entering its territorial waters. Since Ukrainian Navy refused to leave its waters when being warned, Russia fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels off the coast of annexed Crimea, injuring three servicemen. Ukraine described the incident as a provocation. President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on the martial law and Parliament approved it the next day, imposing the martial law in the regions that border Russia and the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova for a 30-day period.
