Positive changes in education are possible only by mobilizing the efforts of all decision-makers and executive bodies. Although the priorities are clear, the municipal division lacks the tools to improve the education system. The opinion was shared by Alexandru Fleas, head of Chisinau’s education, youth and sport division, during the municipal teachers conference on Friday, August 18, IPN reports.
According to Alexandru Fleas, the previous school year was a tough one for the local authorities. The drop out rate increased. 6209 children have been left without supervision by parents gone to work abroad. In the case of 1452 children, both parents are abroad.
“We lack 752 didactic staff members – over 300 teachers and over 400 educators. Auxiliary personnel is also insufficient – we need 95 more cooks and 309 cook assistants and other staff. These numbers are all-time highs. They indicate an alarming situation caused, most of all, by the low wages for these positions”, said Fleas.
According to the official, 53 secondary education schools are using overcrowded buildings. The situation of cafeterias is also difficult. The technological and refrigerating equipment is old and worn. The quality and variety of food is another problem of the municipal education system.
Acting mayor of Chisinau Nistor Grozavu also attended the conference. He praised the resiliency of the city’s education system. He said that even though investments in education are insufficient, they are the future of the country. “We don’t have enough teachers. Wages in the field are low and unattractive for young professionals. We must also find a solution to have school psychiatrists, which is a very important thing”, added Grozavu.
There are over 10,000 people working as teachers and educators in the municipal education system.
